Welcome to the city of Abuhommos

The city of Abu-Hommos was officially established on 1871 as territory of Al-Behira. its Board had been held in Damanhour city at the beginning, then was transferred to Abu-Hommos area after the reestablishment of Damanhour city in 1881. In 1893 the Egyptian government decided to divide the area of Abu-Hommos into two territories (Kafreddawar & Abu-Hommos).

The name of Abu-Hommos is driven from the name of a fisherman had been living in a little cottage around this area. it is believed that, by the time the British was extending the railroad from Alexandria to Kafr-el-Zayat, they called the railway station of this area with the name of the fisherman Abu-Hommos (Father of Hommos, which means garbanzo). Although, some old historic references named this area Shubra Bar.

Abu-Hommos city is the heart of Al-Behira Governorate, it lies almost in the middle of the governorate. the northern border of Abu-Hommos territory is with both Edko & Rasheed (Rosetta) territories, the southern is with both Hosh Eissa & Abu El-Matameer, the eastern is with both Mahmoudia & Damanhour, and the western border is with Kafr Eddawar territory. The Mahmoudia Canal goes through the east-northern side to the west of the territory. Abu-Hommos territory is spread over 527.33 squared KM, which is 5.78 % of the total space of Al-Behira Governorate.
